About us
Nexen GridTech is building a virtual power plant (VPP) dedicated to batteries under 1 MW. Our platform aggregates batteries and solar installations spread across homes as well as commercial and industrial sites, then controls them to generate value on electricity markets: energy markets and flexibility mechanisms.
Our job is to turn thousands of heterogeneous energy assets into a single, unified fleet that can be monitored, optimised and activated in real time. By putting this decentralised flexibility to work, Nexen GridTech helps balance the power system and supports the growing share of renewable energy.
We are currently a team of three and are entering a pivotal stage of our growth. The platform is in production, the first assets are connected and being controlled, and we are now getting ready to scale it.
Nexen GridTech was co-founded by:
- Hadrien Camus, CEO and CentraleSupélec graduate
- Martin Dromigny, CTO, with more than 25 years of experience in software development and architecture.
- Fabien Choné, co-founder of Direct Énergie and now Chair of our Strategic Committee.
What you’ll do
We are looking for a Software Engineer to work across the whole stack, from the fleet control backend to our internal operations interfaces. In a team this size, the scope isn’t set in stone: you will quickly take ownership of entire parts of the platform, and your room for initiative will grow as you prove yourself.
Depending on priorities, you will:
- Design and build the backend APIs and services in Java/Quarkus that orchestrate communication with batteries, partner systems and electricity markets.
- Build the Angular interfaces of our back office: asset configuration, running and analysing control simulations, fleet tracking and real-time operations monitoring.
- Work across the entire data pipeline: collecting and processing time series with InfluxDB, handling event streams with Kafka and persisting business data in PostgreSQL.
- Take part in the platform’s software architecture decisions: service boundaries, interface design, dependency management, performance, scalability and maintainability.
- Help industrialise and secure deployments: containerising applications, deploying to Kubernetes and virtual machines, automating CI/CD pipelines, managing configuration and secrets.
- Implement the resilience, observability and monitoring a distributed system running in real-world conditions needs: logs, metrics, alerts, error handling, incident recovery and service availability tracking.
- Build security best practices into the whole development lifecycle: access control, API security, vulnerability management, and protection of data and communications.
You will work closely with the technical team and directly on business topics (energy markets, optimisation, machine learning).
About you
The role is open to a wide range of experience, from strong junior to experienced profiles (1 to 6 years of experience). Scope and salary are set according to your background. What matters to us:
- Backend and frontend. Comfortable with both, or a solid foundation in one and a real drive to grow in the other. Hands-on experience with Java and Angular is a major plus.
- Software architecture. An understanding of the principles behind building a distributed, modular and scalable platform: API design, separation of concerns, data flow management, resilience and performance.
- DevSecOps mindset. Some initial experience, or a strong drive to learn, in containerisation, Kubernetes, virtual machines, CI/CD pipelines, observability and securing applications and deployments.
- Ability to deliver. Designing consistent APIs and polished interfaces, handling edge cases seriously, writing tests and documenting your work. Being able to deal with imperfect data and ship a working solution quickly, then refine it.
- Rigour. Writing code that is readable, tested and easy to change, with its long-term operation and maintenance in mind.
- Autonomy and initiative. Spotting what needs to be done and driving it forward without waiting for every step to be spelled out. Communicating clearly and working effectively with the rest of the team.
- A desire to learn and to build a useful product.
Engineering degree or equivalent in computer science, or a track record showing proven technical skills.
Bonus points: a feel for algorithms and mathematics, curiosity about industrial IoT and protocols such as Modbus or MQTT, some knowledge of cybersecurity, experience with distributed systems and an interest in the energy sector.
Why join Nexen GridTech?
The market for electricity consumption and generation flexibility is evolving fast! There is no hardware-agnostic, pure-player solution for batteries under 1 MW in France or Europe.
We are building a highly multidisciplinary project: you will have technical freedom and plenty of room to grow.
On the technical side, you will get:
- A healthy technical foundation. A recent product with no legacy debt to pay off, a modern stack (Quarkus, Kafka, InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, Angular) and architecture choices that are still open, which you will help shape directly.
- A short loop between code and production. What you build is quickly deployed and run in real-world conditions, on a fleet of connected physical assets.
- Direct exposure to the business. You work on complex, concrete problems: electricity markets, optimisation, distributed systems and real-time control, with no layers of intermediaries between you and the product.
