Battery aggregator
<1MW
Nexen is the first aggregator of residential and commercial (C&I) batteries with a power rating below 1MW.
Our virtual power plant (VPP) lets batteries take part in the power grid's flexibility mechanisms, and is designed to:
100% software and independent of the hardware used
Optimise control between self-consumption and flexibility
Specialise in batteries
Smart
aggregation
Our algorithms combine mathematics and artificial intelligence. They aggregate and control the capacity of our battery fleet in real time to help balance the power grid.
The benefits
for consumers
Earn money and get the most out of your solar panels and battery by joining our virtual power plant.
Energy independence
Increase your battery's self-consumption, intelligently.
A solution that costs nothing
Our interests are aligned with yours: Nexen earns a share of the revenue generated by taking part in flexibility mechanisms.
Higher returns
Get a battery that is 1.5x to 3x more profitable.
Mobile app
Monitor and control your battery straight from our mobile app or your supplier's.
Optimal control between
self-consumption and flexibility
Our VPP maximises both the savings from self-consumption and the revenue from taking part in power flexibility mechanisms.
Self-consume better
Our control system optimises and prioritises the times when you use solar energy.
Earn more
Nexen offers you a better deal than feed-in tariffs for surplus solar power.
Simple and transparent
We take care of the control, you see all the benefits.
Partnerships
Nexen is a 100% software company that does not sell hardware. We are looking to build partnerships with manufacturers, distributors and installers of batteries and inverters.

Any questions?
What is a VPP, or virtual power plant?
On the power grid, supply and demand have to be balanced at every moment, otherwise power cuts can occur.
Nexen’s VPP, or virtual power plant, helps maintain this balance: it coordinates a large number of batteries and controls them as if they were one big battery.
The grid pays for this service, and Nexen passes that revenue on to the members of its virtual power plant.
What is electricity flexibility?
Electricity flexibility is a site’s ability to adjust how much power it draws from or feeds into the power grid, in response to the grid’s needs and to market signals.
A battery can generate value from flexibility in two main ways:
- Arbitrage: the battery charges or discharges based on electricity prices on the wholesale markets, such as the SPOT market.
- Reserves and the capacity mechanism: part of the battery’s power can be made available to the power grid to help keep it balanced during periods of stress. The battery is then paid for its availability, even if it is not necessarily activated every time.
Nexen’s VPP aims to optimise this value while preserving the site’s self-consumption and respecting the battery’s technical constraints.
How do I connect a battery to Nexen's VPP?
The easiest way to connect your battery to Nexen’s virtual power plant (VPP) is to ask your installer whether they offer a battery that is compatible with our solution.
If they do, Nexen can then activate the battery’s software connection, with the owner’s consent.
Which batteries are compatible with Nexen?
Batteries compatible with Nexen are those fitted with inverters or control systems from partners we have already completed a technical integration with.
Ask your installer whether they offer batteries with inverters that are compatible with the Nexen solution.
Do I need to modify my electrical installation to use Nexen?
No, no specific changes are usually needed when the battery is installed.
Your installer fits the battery as usual. Nexen then simply needs the owner’s consent to access the battery and control it remotely.
What if my inverter isn't compatible yet?
We are constantly working with new inverter manufacturers to make our VPP compatible with as many brands as possible.
If your equipment isn’t on our list of partners yet, get in touch: we’ll look into integration options with the manufacturer concerned.
